DIY Wedding Decor

My husband and I were able to have a 200 person wedding for 1/3 of the price of what the average Seattle wedding is said to cost. It wasn’t necessarily easy, but I love crafting, creating Excel spreadsheets, and anything DIY so it was a challenge I was excited to take on.

To start with, you can see information about our wedding invitations that my brother created here, the DIY envelopes I made here (complete with a tutorial and downloadable PDF), and our DIY dessert options here.

Vintage Pattern Toddler Dress

I mentioned in this post, this post and this post that my husband’s aunt gave me a huge bag of patterns she used to sew clothes for herself and her two daughters, and I can’t believe how much use I’ve gotten out of them. I’m the same size she was in the 70’s/80’s, so I have this amazing stash of vintage patterns that just happen to fit me. Some of them are a little too much to wear these days, but really, it’s only a matter of time until these things come back in style.

I hadn’t used any of the baby/children patterns until I made this overall dress last week. It was really easy to make, and in my biased opinion, I think it turned out really cute. I made a couple of changes to what the pattern calls out (details below), but otherwise I would totally recommend this pattern for beginning sewers.

Work it

A few years ago I had just moved back from New York and was trying to make it work to blog and sell thing I made without having a ‘real’ job. It was a lot of fun, but it just really didn’t work. I wasn’t making enough money. The time involved in making my own patterns, sewing the muslin mock-up, sewing the final garment, taking photos, posting the photos to Etsy, writing a blog post to get people to look at Etsy, all meant I was working 14 hours a day and had no time for anything else. Sigh. This stuff is lot of work.

DIY Wedding Dessert Table

When I found out a friend of mine paid $1,200 for her wedding cake, I was in shock. I knew right then that there was no way we were going to hire someone to make our cake. I love going to weddings, but I couldn’t tell you what any of the dozens of cakes I’ve eaten looked like. I might be able to remember if they were good or not, but even that’s a stretch. Based on our past experiences and our very budgeted/DIY wedding, we were definitely okay saving money in this department.
