DIY Pony Sweatshirt

My friend is throwing a pony party to celebrate her daughter’s third birthday. I did some googling thinking I would buy her a pony book and a stuffed pony or something adorable like that, but when I found this My Little Pony sweatshirt, I knew I had to make my own version of it.

I used the same sweatshirt pattern (McCall’s pattern M6237) that I used to make these rainbow and cloud sweatshirts last year. It’s a really, really easy pattern to follow and requires very little fabric. The best part though, is that I bought it at Value Village years ago for 69 cents!

To make the ears I just made it up as I went. I cut out an ear pattern, sewed two pieces of the grey fabric together and turned them right-side-out.  Since I felt pretty good with how it was going to look, I made the other ear using the same shape. Then I folded it in the middle a bit and tucked each one into a 1″ hole in the hood at about the place that an ear should go. I sewed the hole closed with the ear in it and then finished it off with a zig-zag stitch.

One tip I would do with this sweatshirt pattern is to cut a small slit in the neck at center front. I ended up needing to do this after the first two I made were sewn because it was too hard to get over their toddler heads. So this time I just cut a slit and overlocked the edge to finish it. You could also do a turn back edge with an edge stitch if you wanted.

I bought a magical fleece color combo to create a ‘mane’ on the hood, and a rainbow on the front. To be honest, I completely winged it with the fleece part. The mane pieces ended up being 2 3/4″ x 7″, and the rainbow pieces are 1″ wide that I just arbitrarily sewed to be going into the top of the pocket. I think it worked out really well though! I would absolutely make this hoodie again, and I certainly have enough fleece left over to do so.
