Easy DIY Zipper Pouch

I have quite a few zipper pouches in various sizes that I use for traveling and to organize things in my purse. Seriously, they come in handy more than I would have guessed. Bobby pins, dental floss and hair bands in a small one. Lip balm, hand lotion and cuticle cream in medium-sized one, etc. I went online to buy more and discovered the company I was looking at doesn’t make them anymore. But then, duh, a light bulb went off – I could just make them myself.

I like to have tabs at both ends of the zipper to create a more finished look. Below is a simple tutorial to make a simple pouch with no lining for yourself. To view it larger, download the PDF here.

What you’ll need:

  1. A zipper that’s at least 7″. I bought this bag of multi-colored zippers and love that I’ll have zippers on hand for a long time to come. You can very easily make a zipper shorter, like I do in the tutorial below.
  2. Fabric. I recommend a cat print of any kind, really. I got the one in my photos from Fabric Depot in Portland. This is another great option. For reals though, any cotton will do. I wanted to use something that was easy to sew and easy to wash.

  4. Ruler
  5. Sewing machine
