The easiest DIY zipper pillowcase

This is the easiest zipper pillowcase you’ll ever make. It took me 1.5 hours to make 4, and I was moving pretty slow at first since it’s been so long since I’ve made one. They are seriously so easy.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 pillow insert
  • 1 zipper that’s about 4″ smaller than the side of the pillowcase you’re sewing it to (for my 18″ x 18″ pillow, I used a zipper that is 14″ long)
  • 2 pieces of fabric measuring the size of the pillow insert
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Step 1: Cut your fabric to be the same size as the pillow you’re covering. This seems wrong, but you want it to have a snug fit. The pillow shown below in the tutorial is 18″ x 18″, so I cut two pieces of fabric that are 18″ x 18″.

Step 2: Place fabric right-sides together and sew one side with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Step 3: Iron the seam allowance open.

Step 4: Place zipper face down so it’s centered over the seam and centered on the pillowcase and pin in place.

Step 5: Sew zipper to pillowcase using a zipper foot.

Step 6: Using a zig-zag stitch, make a fat bartack at both ends of the zipper.

Step 7: Using a seam ripper or small sharp scissors, very carefully take the seam out that’s directly on top of the zipper.

Step 8: Open the zipper a couple of inches before moving on (this is so you can turn the pillowcase inside-out at the end).

Step 9: Sew remaining three seams using a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Step 10: Turn pillowcase right-side-out. Using a chop stick or very carefully using scissors, make sure the corners get turned out nicely.

Step 11: Iron seams flat.

Step 12: Insert pillow.
